Budapest is the capital and the largest city in Hungary. Once two cities on each coast of the Danube river, today form a modern city with both elements of tradition and aristocracy displayed on the Buda side of the city, and elements of modern architecture among the busy streets of Pest.
For me the best time to visit Budapest is in Christmas since it has one of the most beautiful Christmas festival in Europe. The whole city is covered in Christmas lights and there are food stands on each square. The whole city gives out that warm holiday feeling making you feel like home even if your miles and miles away from it. If you ever get a chance to visit Europe, or you’re already here, don’t hesitate, make the most of the upcoming Christmas season and visit Budapest.
1. Budapest Parliament
One of the most beautiful buildings in Budapest is the Parliament building. Settled on the bank of Danube river it takes your breath away from which ever angle you look at it. Take a look at the photos below and see for yourself.
2. Danube promenade
The best place to talk a walk in Budapest is certainly the Danube promenade. Next to the river cruises and small coffee shops and patiseries you can relax and enjoy the view. Not to mention the Memorial Shoes on the Danube river in honor of the people killed in World War II.
3.Β GellΓ©rt Hill & Citadella
If you’re looking for a perfect spot to take a photo of the city, Citadella and Gellert Hill is where you want to go.
4. Bridges
Budapest is practically a city known for a good number of bridges, each built in another period of the city’s rich history. Taking a walk down the Danube river or going on a river cruise you have a chance to see each one of them, either during the day or at night when they’re all light up.
5.Β HΕsΓΆk tere or Heroe’s Square
This square displays a stunning set of statues showing Hungarian national heroes throughout the history of this beautiful country.
6. Great Market Hall
Since I’m all about the cooking, I recommend visiting the Great Market Hall where you can find Hungarian delicacies, delicious sweets and all kinds of tasty food. The market is set on three floors, the bottom one where you can buy fresh fish and meat, the ground floor where you can find vegetables, sweets and national products and on the first floor there are stands with souvenirs and restaurants where the sound of Hungarian national music is coming from.
7.Β Fisherman’s Bastion
As a part of the Buda castle complex, Fisherman’s Bastion stands out due to it’s interesting architecture and is certainly a place where you’ll want to take a photo.
8. Buda castle
Buda castle itself is a large complex settled on the bank of Danube river, the main building is home to the National History museum. The small streets are filled with stands where you can buy souvenirs or small coffee shops where you can sit for a cup of coffee or tea.
9.Β Vajdahunyad Castle
Next to the Heroe’s square there is a beautiful park and a lake which freezes during winter and turns into an ice skating ring. On the bank of the lake there is Vajdahunyad castle and a Museum of Agriculture inside, and in front of it there is a set of stands selling souvenirs and delicious Hungarian products.
10. Food
Food is probably the most important thing about visiting a new city and Hungary, especially Budapest is a place full of delicious food at each corner. From amazing goulash to mouth-watering cream pies it offers dishes that will blow your mind with incredible combination of flavours.
Hope that the 10 reasons I shared will make you visit this beautiful city, if not at least to consider visiting. I’m going there for the 3rd or 4th time this Christmas and have to admit I can’t wait!

When we visited Budapest a couple years ago we loved it!! We loved the night time cruise on the Danube river!! And the Jewish synagogue too. Also your train station is absolutely stunning! It looks like it belongs in a movie set. We took the train from Budapest to Salzburg – I took so many photos of the Budapest train stations – just beautiful. We loved the food too, very flavorful. Lovely city Budapest is!!
