Pork roast has always been my family’s go-to dinner idea when everyone was coming over, actually either pork or duck. My grandma used to roast duck and I loved it, I also shared a recipe a few months back and you can still check it out – Roasted duck. Seems like the tradition of making duck or pork roast has imprinted on me, so now it’s also my favourite family dinner idea.
This weekend’s my family weekend when we all get together, hang out, I play with the kids and we have a nice time. Even though it may seem like it, we don’t see each other as much so I’m happy every time we get the chance to do so. Pork roast as you may conclude is on the menu and can’t wait to taste it. It’s so hot outside and some wouldn’t want to make a recipe like this, but it’s worth it, the scent of roasted potatoes will drive you crazy making you check them every 10 min if they’re done. So if you’re up for a delicious dinner – this is just the recipe!

Preparation: 25 min
Cook time: 1 h 30 min
Servings: 4 – 6
Ingredients
- 1 kg ham hock
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1,5 dl dark beer
- 1 kg potatoes
- 200 g pork fat
- 2 tbsp red paprika
- 2 tbsp garlic powder
- 3 tsp red chili pepper
- Salt & pepper to taste
How to
- Preheat the oven to 200° C.
- Peel the potatoes, slice them and place them in a large pot, cover them with water and cook until water comes to a boil. Drain potatoes.
- Season ham hock with salt and garlic powder. Spread 50 g of pork fat over a medium bake tray.
- Spread 150 g of pork fat over a large bake tray and place it in a preheated oven so it melts.
- Season the potatoes with red paprika, 2 tablespoons of garlic powder, red chili pepper, salt and pepper.
- Bake the ham hock in a preheated oven in a bake tray, turning it over every now and then, sprinkling it with dark beer and it should be ready at the same moment as the potatoes are.
- Meanwhile while baking the ham hock for about 20 – 30 min place the potatoes on an oiled up tray and bake for 1 h and 20 min occasionally turning them over until crispy & golden.
It’s so interesting to learn about different cuisines in different parts of the world. I use ham hocks to season soups, like Michigan Navy Bean Soup and never cook them as a roast. My idea of a pork roast is not the same. Looks good with those potatoes!

My favorite ham recipe is made with beer – just like your ham hocks. We can’t get lovely ham hocks like that here – or at least I’ve never seen any! But those potatoes are incredible. That has me drooling!!
