Island Vis is a small island off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic sea, it’s also the farthest inhabited Croatian island. Interesting fact is that in the 4th century BC, there was a Greek colony Issa founded on the island. Since then island has changed, and two large settlements developed on each side of the island, today known as the city of Vis and Komiža.
Island Vis is a major tourist destination that has kept its tradition and familiar Dalmatian architecture of stone-built houses and narrow streets. As a tourist destination it is a popular spot for yachts from all around the world and for the last two years it has been a stop on the famous music festival Ultra’s party tour.
Above all island Vis is a lovely island made for rest and relaxation under the golden sun on white beaches.
1. Relax and enjoy the view
The first thing you should do after exiting the ferry is to sit down, relax and enjoy the view from many cafes, restaurants or city benches settled next to the sea. The sunset will take your breath away while you enjoy a glass of Croatian red wine.
2. Historic city centre
As mentioned earlier, the city of Vis, at least the city centre has kept its stone-built houses mostly found on and off the Croatian coast.
3. Boat tours & diving
As one of the activities that the tourist agencies offer are boat tours and a visit to Stiniva Cove or Green Cave where you can go diving and exploring the stunning underwater life of Adriatic.
4. Walking tours
After relaxing, one of the things you can do is to take a walk, either through the city or on a walking tour of the island, exploring beautiful nature and hidden gems. Let yourself get lost in the narrow streets of the Vis city centre which hide small bakeries and many artist galleries. You should know Vis is famous for being home to a number of Croatian artists and it’s filled with small galleries offering breathtaking paintings and sculptures.
5. Fort George
Fort George is a stone castle on the island of Vis, just 10 minutes from the city centre. Today there is a beautiful restaurant offering delicious Croatian delicacies, fresh seafood and amazing wine. As mentioned, every year during summer Ultra music festival organizes as the last stop on their tour, a party inside the castle. If you’re not up for a party, or even delicious food, there is always a breathtaking view from the castle that you have to experience.
6. Beautiful beaches & crystal blue sea
Last but not least, and maybe most important is the sea and the beautiful beaches all around the island. Only and the right way to relax when you’re on the island of Vis is to lay on the beach, sunbathe and enjoy every minute of your stay!
