Zagreb is my city, it’s where I was born, where I live, work and go to school. Sometimes it seems like a boring city with so much potential, usually on those days when all of your friends have plans and you just wish you can pack a bag and travel somewhere far and exotic, but you always come back.. it always finds a way to surprise you and be the city you know and love.
There is a place near my home, I mentioned it a few times now, and it’s certainly a place you’ll want to visit if you find yourself in Zagreb. The most beautiful park called Maksimir near the busy city center can be an escape from the stress, a hideout from the hot sun that shines over the sleepy roofs of a lost city, a spot where you can connect with every aspect of the nature around you and enjoy the fresh air. Everyone has a place like that and Maksimir is my place.
From the early spring I go there jogging every morning, I take my niece and nephew there to play on a family weekend, I have picnics with friends and every time I’m stressed out because of work or classes I find a calm spot where I can relax and read a book.
This is just a piece of Zagreb and all of its wonders, a piece I always think of at the first mention of it. When making recipes and dishes like the one I’m sharing with you today I love to think about all the things that make me happy about living in Zagreb. I hope you have a similar place yourselves where you can find a spot and just relax, we always need a second for ourselves.
This recipe is a family favourite, you probably tried a version of it but I encourage you to give this one a try, the Dijon mustard and fresh shallot really bring it to a new level. Have a lovely week and happy cooking!

Preparation: 25 min
Cook time: 30 min
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 4 large pork fillets
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 4 slices ham
- 4 sticks Edam cheese
- 4 tsp Dijon mustard
- shallot, freshly chopped
- all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 50 ml milk
- bread crumbs
- Salt & pepper to taste
How to
- Beat pork fillets if needed. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Let them chill in the fridge for 20 min.
- Spread a teaspoon of Dijon mustard over every slice of pork fillet and sprinkle some chopped shallot. Place a slice of ham over it and a cheese stick. Wrap the fillet around ham and cheese so you get pork fillets stuffed with cheese and ham. You can help yourself by using toothpicks to connect the ends of the meat or tie a thread around it.
- Beat two eggs with milk in a bowl. Next cover each fillet with flour, next the mixture of eggs and milk and finish with a bread crumb coating.
- Heat oil in a frying pan. Fry Zagreb steaks over low heat until crispy and golden.
Beautiful place! Thanks for sharing.

Zagreb looks beautiful. It’s always great to hear and learn about other bloggers and where they might call home. I love that park too, I could easily find a spot there and be alone in my thoughts. The pork looks lovely too, you’ve paired it well with introducing your hometown.

Chef this sounds so amazing and I can’t wait to try it – and I’ve never heard of it but have made other rolled up chicken type dishes. I loved the gorgeous photos and hearing about your city – I felt calmer just looking at them!

I’ve been to Zagreb, and I very much enjoyed my time there. I didn’t find a steak like this while I was there, but I did come home with a couple of absolutely beautiful neckties. 😉 I especially loved the older parts of the city – so charming!

I’ve made schnitzel many times, but never thought about stuffing it, as with chicken cordon bleu. That’s a great idea. Looks nice and crispy.
