Crostata is an Italian baked tart that dates back to early cookbooks like Art of cooking by Martino da Como, published in 1465. It’s a rustic version of an open fruit tart baked in a pie tray but we all know that, the fact that is surprising to me is that it dates back to the 15th century. In my last post Roasted chicken & fries I mentioned that French fries date back to 1600s, so it’s really interesting how today we still eat dishes that people have been eating for centuries and they’re still widely popular. Seems like when it comes to food some things never change.
I like preparing Crostata since it is probably the easiest dessert one can make and it can be prepared for any occasion. When making a choice which fruit to use for a Crostata the possibilities are endless, but probably the best option is peaches. You should be using peaches that are ripe and sweet and full of juice. Crostata is also perfect for a picnic, it’s also the last occasion I was baking it for.
Near my home there is the most beautiful park in Zagreb – Maksimir. I’ve been going there since I was a kid, nowadays I like to go jogging there or go for a picnic with my niece and nephew. Last weekend we went there for a picnic because the city of Zagreb organizes a whole event called Zagreb Picnic every weekend with music, food & drink stands and toys for kids. I decided to make a Peach Crostata and it turned out very delicious, we bought vanilla ice cream and brought it to a whole new level and I would certainly recommend using ice cream when serving it.
If you never tried making Crostata you should really give it a try since it is so easy to make and so delicious. Enjoy!

this looks yummy, might attempt a version with vegan butter! In the ingredients, did you mean a pinch of salt? (or no salt required for this recipe?) thanks π
