Despite the name French fries they are actually not French. The origins of French fries are traced back to Belgium where they’ve been preparing them since 1600s. According to some stories, villagers often ate small fried fish, but during the winter the river would freeze over so they had to find another source of food, so they turned to potatoes. American soldiers first came across French fries during the World War I, and since the official language of the Belgium army was French they name fried potatoes as French fries. All of these stories may or may not be true but today French fries are one of the most popular food in the world.
When it comes to French fries everyone has their own favourite dip, from ketchup and mayonnaise to sweet chilli and tartar sauce. The biggest surprise to me were chocolate covered French fries they started serving in McDonald’s in Japan. My favourite dip is sweet chilli, and of course ketchup. So how many of your like French fries, and what’s your favourite dip? π
The main thing about staying healthy and keeping a healthy diet is balance – finding the perfect balance isn’t easy, but if you’re committed you’ll figure out what works for you. This dish isn’t as healthy, but all of us have our cheat day – that day when we let ourselves eat anything and everything, this would be one of my go-to dishes when I feel free to eat anything. So what does your cheat-day dish consist of? π
Preparation: 25 min
Cook time: 35 min
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 800 g potatoes
- vegetable oil
- ground red pepper
- 650 g chicken drumsticks
- 3 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp curry powder
- 1 cucumber, sliced
- 2 tsp sour cream
- 2 tbsp apple vinegar
- 1 tsp shallot
- 1 clove garlic pressed
- 1 tsp dill
- salt & pepper to taste
How to
- Season the chicken drumsticks with salt, pepper, garlic powder, red pepper and curry powder. Preheat the oven to 190Β° C. Bake the drumsticks for half an hour until crispy.
- While the Β chicken drumsticks are in the oven peel and wash the potatoes. Slice them and fry them in preheated vegetable oil until crispy and golden. Season the fries with red pepper and salt.
- Peel the cucumber, slice it and place it in a bowl. In a second small bowl whisk together sour cream, apple vinegar, shallot, dill, pressed garlic, salt & pepper. Season the sliced cucumbers with sour cream dressing.
- Serve baked drumsticks with fries and cucumber salad.
And in Belgium these potatoes are really!! good ( and in Netherland). At home I do not eat french fries, becaouse I do not like all this fritter stuff. But in restaurant it would be nice. And with ketchup. Or with mayonnaise π

Looks so tasty! I have to admit I am not a big French fries loverπ, I do like them homemade, more like potato wedges (like you did) with spices. βΊ
